Biodiversity Trail
Description

Every two days from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., a guided visit to the botanical garden is offered for groups of up to 15 people. Participants will embark on a guided tour through the botanical garden’s natural park, exploring a Medium Subevergreen Forest and Mangrove Swamp and stopping at interpretation sites to learn about key plants and ecosystems. The tour concludes with an explanation of chicle exploitation at the chiclero camp. The entry fee is 120 pesos per person, and an English-speaking guide is available for an additional 800 pesos, with an estimated total cost of approximately $72 USD.

 
 

Participants develop a stronger understanding of ecosystem connectivity and gain insight into local plant species and their ecological and cultural significance. The experience increases knowledge of historical economic activities, including chicle exploitation, while fostering a deeper appreciation for the region’s natural heritage.

The cost is 150 pesos per person, with an optional local guide available for an additional 500 pesos, for an estimated total of approximately $49 USD. Participants embark on a guided experience visiting the Maya solar and meliponario exhibits, the archaeological site “El Altar,” and the Chiclero Camp. Along the route, interactive stops include discussions and activities focused on Maya construction techniques, traditional beekeeping, climate change, and the history of chicle exploitation, connecting cultural knowledge with environmental learning.

Participants gain insight into traditional Maya architecture and cultural practices while building awareness of how climate change affects historical and ecological sites. The experience deepens understanding of the historical and economic significance of chicle exploitation and strengthens appreciation for the region’s rich cultural and ecological diversity.

The bird-watching program runs 2–3 times per week during daytime hours and is limited to small groups of up to 8 participants. The cost is $75 USD per person and includes a certified nature guide, lunch, and entrance to the botanical garden. Participants join a guided tour through the garden’s natural park using binoculars to observe resident and migratory bird species. Along the route, the guide leads discussions about avian biodiversity in the Yucatán Peninsula, helping visitors identify species and understand their ecological roles within the region.

 
 

Participants develop practical skills in bird identification and observation while gaining a stronger understanding of the Yucatán Peninsula’s avian biodiversity. The experience highlights the importance of preserving natural habitats for bird species and fosters a deeper personal connection with nature through focused bird-watching activities.
